World War II is over, gas rationing has ended and home movie film, unavailable during the war, is back on the market! In early Autumn Gus and Margaret drive up the Storm King Highway (today's N.Y. Route 9W), then son Warren proudly shows off his newly-acquired driving skills on the streets of College Point, N.Y. Now it's Summertime (earlier or after?) and the family visits Scheeper's, a Long Island nursery.

Knowing what happened to Long Island after WWII, I'm sure that Scheepers was sold to developers a long time ago. Does anyone out there remember where it used to be and what lies there now? UPDATE: September, 2005 Last month my wife and I were driving down New Hempstead Road in the Old Brookhaven area of Long Island looking for plant nurseries. We spotted one whose owner, it turned out, had lived on Long Island for most of her 80+ years. I asked her if she could recall a past nursery called "Scheepers." She replied "Yes, they used to be right next door." (!) According to her, the property was bought up by a Universalist church sometime in the '60's, then sold and developed into condos. Unsurprisingly, the original buildings and gardens are long gone. Scheeper's Nursery exists today as an online business - you can Google it's name. -Robert |
